This was an interesting little article about library organization. I think I will always be a fan of the Dewey Decimal System because its easy to learn. The Library of Congress System, however, is utter madness.

Ok, so today I explored a site called TED.com. Mostly, it's a really hard to navigate compendium of videos and interviews that have to do with nothing fun whatsoever. It would seem that it's purpose is educational, which isn't all bad. But my go-to search term for new websites is always "Harry Potter" and TED turned up a dismally disappointing number of results.

Finally, I started searching for nerdy things I actually like, like aerospace and astrophysics, and stumbled upon an interview with Bobak Ferdowski - the NASA Mohawk Guy and one of my favorite nerds of 2012. Second only to Chris Hardwick.

Anyway, Bobak is a pretty cool dude and I'd love to meet him one day. I love what he says in this interview about how our image of aerospace engineers is completely dated and that it's not uncommon at all for a NASA flight director to have a mohawk. How cool is that? I bet he never though 10 years ago that he'd be landing a rover on Mars and sporting the world's most popular mohawk.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Santa came to the library on the 29th and we were all in a flurry of excitement! All of the librarians had their pictures made with Santa and made a few Christmas wishes.

He was marvelous - as always - and his beard was absolutely resplendent! Santa impressed all of the little ones (and some of the bigger ones) and even made his way over to the local Italian restaurant Giuseppe's after the library closed to mingle with some more locals.

The following day, the 55+ seniors group came in to do some serious holiday decorating. I'll post some pictures on Flickr in just a little bit. Check them out because it looks pretty great in here!

 And another thing: if you didn't already know, every Macy's store across the country contains a special North Pole post box that delivers Christmas letters straight to Santa Claus. And for every letter received, Macy's donates $1 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. I'm hoping to make these letters available to the patrons of our library who were unable to come and see Santa on Thursday and make a run to Macy's to deliver their letters. But you can also go online and print out special Santa stationery to write your own letter and deposit it in the post box yourself. Go here to print your stationery and explore the story of "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause". Do it! Because it's a really good thing! And don't let being an adult deter you from sending a letter to Santa - just take a moment of your time and help out a great cause. Please and thank you!

Image Generating

One of the assignments for the 23-things is to explore image generating site. Now, I'm 22 and pretty proficient with Tumblr, so this is no new territory for me. But I did manage to find a few themes I had never seen before.

Next, I found a website that lets you "sharkify" yourself. But I thought Michael Fassbender would look better as a shark than I would. Seeing as how, you know, he's already one.

Quick Edit on Halloween

So, when I made the post about the number of trick-or-treaters we had on Halloween night, only about thirty had come through, but I was still impressed. Little did I know we would have 493 patrons that night.

Four-hundred and ninety-three!

That's probably about a week's worth of patrons all in one night, just to put things in a bit of perspective. We're rarely actually busy here.

Eventually, we ran out of candy - having anticipated maybe fifty kids - and had to put the world's most disappointing sign on the door: "Sorry, we are out of candy. Happy Halloween!"

After that, the chillens stopped coming in. I guess I'm not surprised.

But still - 493 people! Just thought I'd share.

Halloween at the Library

So far we've had no fewer than thirty trick-or-treaters come into the library this evening, and the night is still young! I love Halloween and I love all of the costumes. What a great day to be working for the public.

Henry Higgins got into the spirit. :)

Quick Little Craft

I made this cute little corner bookmark in about 5 minutes with some scratch paper that was lying about the library. The best part is, the book he's eating is Frankenstein. I love monsters. (Although, the jury's still out on Frankenstein's creature being the real monster)

Find the template and tutorial here. If you're following the tutorial and want to add teeth, glue them to the underside of the first triangle you fold down. I used the gluestick cap to trace the whites of my little monster's eyes and a hole-punch remnant for the pink irises. The pupils are just black pen.
